Arrest on a violation of bond conditions

Date and Time: Friday, February 13, 2015 at 3:22 a.m.

Location of incident: 8000 block of E. River Rd., Chippewa Township, Isabella County

Arrested Subject: 48 year old male from Mt. Pleasant, MI

Deputies were notified there was an individual that lived in the 8000 block of E. River Rd. that was violating one of his bond release conditions (no alcohol subsequent to an Operating While Intoxicated arrest the previous night).  While deputies were en-route, Central Dispatch advised the individual was trying to drive away but became stuck in his driveway.  He then took off on foot behind his residence.  The caller told Central Dispatch that he may commit suicide.Arr

Upon arrival, deputies followed foot tracks south from the residence back into the woods and to the Chippewa River.  Deputies observed that the tracks had crossed the river, which was not completely frozen.

Due to temperatures being -2 degrees, deputies became further concerned for the individual’s well being.  An ambulance was requested to stage, and officers from three other police agencies were requested to assist in searching for the individual.  A helicopter was also requested to assist.

Ultimately, deputies tracked the individual and located him hiding up in a tree.  Initially, he refused to come down, stating he did not want to go back to jail.  He eventually agreed to come down and he was immediately turned over to paramedics.

Injuries: The individual was subjected to sub-zero conditions for approximately 1-1/2 hours.  Part way through his time in the woods, he lost his both of his boots.  When he was finally located, one foot had only a sock on it and the other foot was bare.  He was immediately transported to McLaren Central Michigan Hospital for treatment of severe frostbite and abrasions.
