Undersheriff Tom Burns

Undersheriff BurnsUndersheriff Tom Burns was born and raised in Midland, Michigan. He attended Delta University where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice. He then attended the Northwestern Police Academy, where he graduated in 1997. Tom started out his law enforcement career with the City of Ithica. He then went to the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police department where he spent 11 years, including 6 as a Road Sergeant. Tom then went on to spend the next 6 years with the City of Alma. Sheriff Main appointed Tom as Undersheriff in April of 2016. Tom and Sheriff Main had previously worked together and Tom was chosen because of their same philosophies on ethical and moral views.

Tom is a certified Field Training Officer, Field Training Supervisor, Driving Instructor and Firearms Instructor. Over his years in law enforcement some of his responsibilities have included scheduling, budgeting, payroll and supervision of both road patrol and dispatchers.

Tom is passionate about instructing and giving knowledge and/or a different perspective on a topic as it opens the mind to different possibilities. Tom also believes community involvement is important as it builds positive relationships between the Sheriff's Office and the citizens of Isabella County.
